The tiny kettle squealed as smoke poured out of it's mouth. X turned and stood up, abandoning her writing for the tea. She started to remove the old, beat-up kettle, but dropped it back onto the old, wooden burner, rubbing her hand. The handle was blazing hot. She snatched up a rag and wrapped it around the handle, moving the kettle onto the little table. A little, cracked teacup was placed next toit, and she poured a steady stream of boiling water into the cup. Grabbing some dried mint leaves, she sprinkled them up into a fine powder and sprinkled them into the water. Mixing up the mixture, X grabbed her pencil, stuck it behind her ear and closed her writing book and put in away in the little bookcase. When she finally finished making her drink, X took a quick sip before cleaning everything up. Putting away the mint, washing and putting away both the kettle and the spoon, and tossing the rag in the wash pile. She as going to have to go out to the stream today and wash all the clothes.
That was the problem with having no parent at home. Sure, sometimes it seems great. But mostly, it means a bunch of chores for X. Which was okay...most of the time. But taking care of Fel and Daniel was taking it's toll. The thing that scared X most was the idea that she might not be able to do it. She could hear them running around outside, playing in the stream. Even though she had had to abandon what little childish actions that she had had, it didn't mean they had to.X wanted to prevent that from happening.
So, X swept, cleaned, made food, and helped them with schoolwork. And she went to school and had a job. Such a scattered life. But X didn't mind...well, not normally.
As the time ticked and X had finished tidying up the kitchen, she collapsed in the wooden chair with a sigh. Atleast she had a moment to relax.

Ryuu was outside- dodging chores as usual. He hated to be cooped up inside when he could be exploring out. It was a nice day; the sun was shining and the air was cool. Birds chirped from in the trees- a soft melody that rang in the air. A grin was upon his face- like always. It was a nice day, what wasn't to be happy about? Yes, his family struggled- every family in the lower class did- but they would get through. Eventually, at least. And he would help in any way he could-besides chores. What he was doing now was helping; his thieving from the upper people to get money. It brought in a steady income, or at least enough to feed his family of nine. He only wished he could do more.. To help the less fortunate people of the lower. As he walked through the streets Ryuu could feel his stomach tightening, he was hungry. A vendor to his right was selling a cart of apples; the round, red fruit glinted in the sun causing his stomach to rumble in protest. Casually, Ryuu slipped his hand into the cart and pulled out a piece of fruit. Unfortunately, his luck didn't hold up this time and the cart owner happened to be looking in his exact direction. ”Hey!” he angrily called out, flashing a short and worn looking sword, ”Get back here, kid!” A wise man would have been scared, but then Ryuu wasn't the wisest around. Laughing, he ran his hand quickly through a red mass of hair and called out to the man. ”Catch me if ya can!” He shoved the apple in his mouth and took off running down the street, green headband flapping in the wind. Practice makes perfect, and Ryuu was a practiced run-away. He knew the alleys of the lower class like the back of his hand. As he ran he giggled like a mad-man; his arms pumped and his sandals kicked up billowing clouds of dust. He could hear the angered shouts of the man yards behind him. Ryuu pushed his legs harder and faster, and when a turn came up he veered sharply to the left and ducked behind the small space in between two cottages. His breath came out in huge puffs, interrupted by his laughing. When he was sure the man was gone, Ryuu came out of the crack and collapsed on the house's porch. His laughing soon turned to hiccups as he rolled about the stranger's porch, gasping for breath, his stolen prize next to him.

A yell. A clatter. Laughter, and then hiccuping. All these things filled X's ear as she stiffened, turning her head slowly to look at the door. Someone's at the door. the first thing that came into her head. The giggling of Fel could still be heard, so X was well aware that both her and Daniel were perfectly safe at the moment. But X disn't know whi was at the door, so she expected the qorst. Someone who had come to take then away. You see, with X still being underage, there was the possibility that all three Quinn children would be taken away and given to someone who was a legal guardian. It wouldn't matter to most Lowers, but since her mom was so well known, for some reason her being the Guardian just wouldn't do. Every day X was terrified that someone would come along an take her and her siblings away. And that just wouln't do.
So, X stood slowly, grabbing a hold of her katana sword that she had hidden in the crack between the bookcase and the wooden wall. Fingering the red handle, X approached the door cautiously. She grabbed a hold of the doorknob, her hand hesitant before swinging the door wide open and slashing her sword out, pointing it menacingly at whoever was on the porch.
As it so happened, that person she ended up pointing the tip of her katana to was a short, red-headed boy. Her eyes remained menacingly, although there was a flash of surprise in her eyes. It only lasted a second, "Who the hell are you?" she demanded automatically, not lowering the weapon. Her eyes scanned over him critically. He looked young, maybe... 13? But why was he out here alone? On her porch? People these days.

Ryuu's laughed ended as soon as the katana's cool tip touched his bare neck. His hiccups, however, couldn't be controlled. He threw his hands to his mouth to try and stop the hiccuping, but to no avail. Oh, crap, he thought, You're in for it now, Ryuu. Green eyes went wide for a second, then filled with amusement. Seeing that it was no use, trying to stop the hiccuping, he proceeded to throw his hands into the air. "H-hey! he exclaimed, interrupted by his little gasps. "There's no need for that, little lady!" He then burst into a fit of laughter again- oblivious to the current danger- and then scooted back a few inches, away from the piercing tip of the weapon. His eyes shone with joy and his grin was wide. Bright red hair flopped over his worn headband and into his childish face- giving him a crazed appearance. "The name's Ryuu, yours?" Seeing as this girl was certainly from the lower class, he felt like he had nothing to fear. What could she rat him out for? Why would she rat him out anyway- they were all in the same boat- everyone from the lower was. They had to lean on each other, unlike the stuffy upper class people who went along with their business everyday- ignoring those around them. The upper.. With that little thought his eyebrows furrowed and his grin became a scowl for a split second. But nothing could keep Ryuu down for long- and his mouth once again returned to it's silly expression.

X raised an eyebrow, surprised at the attitude of the newcomer. Atleast he had ceased his laughter when he had realized she was in fact threatening to slash his head clean off. He seemed harmless enough, but X's gaze didn't soften. She glared at him, "No need, is there? A thief lays down on my porch. What do you expect me to do? Welcome you with open arms and a plate of cookies?" she replied dryly, watching him laugh with a look of exasperation on her face. What was this kid doing here? "Look, kid. I've got stuff to do, and I can't exactly do that with you making a scene on the porch." she lowered her sword, the tip of it nicking the wooden floor.
She could hear the Uppers approaching, fast. But she couldn't leave him here. Groaning, she looked over to him, and, with reluctance, "Come inside, or clear out." she turned, striding back inside and propping up her katana next to the door. She poked her head out the back door, "FEL! DANIEL! GET IN HERE!" she yelled. X didn't want them outside if Uppers were coming. The kids raced inside and disappeared in another room, not noticing the fact that someone else was there.

Ryuu laughed again; a bubbling sound that flowed throughout the street. "Thief? Who said anything about thievery, eh?" Picking up the apple he took a large bite from it, chewing slowly. Absentmindedly he tossed the core onto the street, then proceeded to stand up and stretch his arms above his head while making the cocky remark, "Now that you mention it, some cookies would be nice- I had that apple, but I've also had a knack for something sweeter." He flashed another of his wide grins and gave a wink. However, when he heard her call him 'kid' his eyebrows shot up and his grin quickly turned to a sour pout. "Now, look here, you can't be older than me! Who ya calling kid?" He crossed his arms and looked her up and down- she was tall, too tall, and he was short, too short. By just looking at the two next to each other, you would never know them to be the same age. His pout slowly grew larger until his face held an outright scowl. ”Just because I'm short..” he muttered, more to himself than to the girl. Ryuu was about to continue grumbling, but a set of footsteps echoed throughout the lower streets. His pout transformed into curiosity, and slowly he pulled out white machete from a bag slung over his shoulder. A fight- just what he needed to spark up today! Not thinking-as always- Ryuu was about to charge into the streets when he heard the girl sigh. ”Yeah, yeah, I'm a'coming- I guess.” With his weapon still held firmly in his hand, Ryuu walked into the house. Once the door was shut he slowly spun his machete in his hand, looking it over for any imperfections. ”Ya know, you still didn't tell me your name. I gave you mine- fair is fair.”

"Just because you didn't say you're a thief doesn't mean you aren't one. I've seen you around a couple of times stealing," X replied lazily, leaning against the door frame, "Plus, I could hear the yelling and the Uppers running after you. It was easy to figure out."His next comment made her blink. Either he was trying to irritate her or flirt with her, Rolling her eyes, she turned, beckoning him to follow. But when he continued to speak, she turned, "You seriously think were the same age? You look...thirteen at best." she said. He was exceptionally short, wasn't he? But that might be just because she was so very tall. Either way, she highly doubted they were both fifteen...but then again...maybe they were.
She watched, with faint amusement, as Ryuu ran out into the street. Was he seriously planning on fighting then Uppers? That was really the last thing she needed, she didn't want to get dragged into a fight. Even though she loved the idea of fighting the Uppers, she couldn't afford getting hurt right now. Maybe later.
AS he followed her in, she went ahead and poured him some of the tea she had just made. Perhaps it was out of habit, or maybe she wanted to show a bit of hospitality. Ryuu looked skinny as a stick. When she heard him ask her for her name, she laughed, "Fair is fair, huh? Do you seriously believe that bullsh*t? Nothing about this place is fair." she paused, "But I suppose you can know my name. I'm X. You might have seen me at school or at the cafe where I work."

Ryuu laughed and clapped his hands. So she did know he was a thief. Perhaps he should be more careful when stealing things from now on. If she had seen, who else also had? And how long would it take for him to be ratted out? While most were trustworthy, there were the few weasels who would sell anyone out for a penny or two. However, those worries were pushed from his mind quickly. No worry inhabited Ryuu's head for very long. "Guilty as charged," he said with a fake bow and a smirk. When the topic of his age came up again, Ryuu placed his hand on his hips and stared hard at her. "I'm fifteen, not thirteen. I just happen to be short for your age. How old are you?” Just because he put on an irritated face on didn't mean he really was, because when some tea was poured he greatly flopped into a chair. Slowly sipping he nodded gravely and the words she had just said. For a small moment his face and tone were both serious. ”I know what you mean, X..” he said. ”That's why I steal. The upper have everything and we have nothing!” His face lit up once more and he began to boast. ”I don't just steal apples, ya know. I do much, much bigger jobs too.” To prove his point his twirled his machete once more in his hand with a playful wink. Stupid, stupid move. It was true, though. His thievery went much further than food. Figurines, fancy silverware, even little things like cloth, whatever he could get his hands on. The only problem was few people wanted to buy such items. Nobody in the lower class had the money, and he didn't dare to try and sell anything to the upper class- they would easily figure out that it was stolen. No, he had to sell to rich and passing merchants- which happened to be few and far in between. Soon he knew his luck would fail him, some upper would discover or his buyers would run out. The question was- which would happen first?

This boy sure was strange. X watched his display with mild amusement, before blinking in surprise at his age. So they were the same age after all. "Well. looks like you were right. I'm also fifteen." as much as she hated admitting she was wrong. X just hoped he wasn't older when it came down to birthdate.
X listened to him talk about how Uppers have everything. "So that's why you steal. I thought it was just because you were hungry or something." as he began to boast, X let out a tiny chuckle, "Good for you, Ryuu. Although I think there are better ways to get back at them. Like fighting them." As he twirled around his machete, she ducked, trying not to get hit with the blade,"Hey, careful there. I don't want blood on the floor. If you wanna hurt someone, go do it outside." Lord, if he hurt anyone with that weapon of his... her siblings swam into view. If he hurt them... but he wouldn't. He said he didn't like Uppers, so he wouldn't have any reason to hurt or steal from them.
"So what do you do with the goods you steal?" she asked, taking a sip of her tea, Do you keep them? Or do you sell them?"

Ryuu couldn't help but boast. "Ha!" he exclaimed, "I just knew we were the same age!" A twinge of satisfaction rose in his chest- being right always gave him the feeling of accomplishment. Oops! While spinning his machete, he almost whacked X in the head. That would have been nasty.. At her complaint he stopped twirling his weapon and gently put it back into his bag. He would really have to work on his weapon handling.. When it came to action, he could use the machete well, but when tricks came along- well, he needed work. As the topic of his thievery came up, Ryuu perked his ears and straightened up his seat- desperately trying to make himself look taller. ”Naw, I'm hungry, yeah, but I steal for the satisfaction. I know that I can do something right under their snobby noses- I know that I, a mere lower class boy, outsmarted the nobles! Yes, I guess I could launch an attack, but what good would that really do? People could be killed. And even if I succeeded that way, they would know who I was. Soon I'd have the toughest fighters on my front porch- wanting revenge. No, that's not the way to go. It's better to be subtle and safe then glorious and in harm.” The last bit was a tad ironic of Ryuu, for he was a both boastful and ignorant. The thing that really drove him to be careful was his family-they meant everything to him. If someone was harmed because of his sloppy actions, he would never forgive himself. ”Well, you see, I sell most things I take. People would start to notice if all of a sudden people of our status were eating from golden forks. It's much safer to sell those items and buy more practical things for my family- like food, clothes, or tools to fix up our house.” After his 'speech', Ryuu took a big gulp of tea. Huge mistake. The liquid was still hot and scorched his tongue. Letting out a small squeal, Ryuu slapped his hands over his mouth, rocking back and forth while moaning in discomfort.

"Congratulations." X mused as he boasted about him being correct. My, he was pretty bostful, wasn't he? X leaned back in her seat, relaxing a bit as she listened to him talk. But as he continued to speak, X found her mind beginning to drift, and soon she zoned out completely.
X began pondering about this whole thing. How the Uppers valued themselves over them. How unfair it all was. While it was annoying, it was interesting how so many Lowers, like herself and Ryuu, stood up against all this. How people fought and stole to show how unfair it all was. It made her feel closer to everyone else in the Lower part of town. And it was nice, to an extent. But it also sucked.
She was snapped out of her random thoughts as Ryuu began to rap up his little speech. The last words she caught were about No, that's not the way to go. It's better to be subtle and safe then glorious and in harm.” X chuckled quietly, "Says the boy who brags about the fact that he's a thief."
X listened quietly as he explained what he did with what he stole. "Yeah, I guess that makes sense." X nodded.
As X took a sip of her tea, she saw Ryuu burn his tongue by taking a giant gulp. Choking or her drink, X began to laugh. And hard too. Which was rare- X didn't normally laugh loudly. After about 10 seconds of doubled-over laughter, X straightened up, trying to breath. "Ah, sorry," she panted, still smiling, "I haven't seen something that funny in a while... are you okay? Want something vold for your tongue?" she asked, still laughing a bit. X felt bad for laughing, he didn't look to happy about that, but it was all too funny. She hadn't seen much funny things lately.

Holding his burnt tongue in his hand Ryuu mumbled out, "Yes, well, I can brag to people who will respect the thievery. 'Uppers won't- at all!." When X doubled over in laughter, Ryuu faked a hurt face- but inside he too was smiling. However, he couldn't keep his smile inside for very long and soon he too was grinning ear to ear. The grin quickly transformed into a muffled laughter. One hand held his sore tongue and the other was placed over his stomach. "O-ouch!" he groaned between gasps of laughter. "I-it hurts to laugh!" Tears starting to flow from his eyes and soon his gasps of laughter didn’t make a sound. ”D-dang!” he giggled out. ”I have h-hiccups again!” Even after X stopped laughing and apologized, Ryuu was still giggling like a mad-man. ”I-I’m fine, but c-can I get t-that something for my m-outh?” he gasped out, desperately trying to control his laugher. He concentrated on slowing his breathing, long and controlled breaths. Soon his laugher subsided, giving away to just hiccups. ”Sorry about that,” he mumbled, still holding his tongue. ”I can never seem to control my laughter.” He winked and pushed away his still steaming cup of tea. There was no way he would be drinking that any time soon!

X couldn't subdue her laughter, especially as Ryuu began laughing too. But soon her laughter began to die down and she nodded, still smiling, "Yeah, I have some cold water, that should help." she stood up and strode over to the sink, filling a cup with the icy water. Ice cubes would have been better, but X didn't have any, so Ryuu was just going to have to settle for this for now. After the little cup was filled to the brim, X walked back and placed it in front of him, "Here you go, this should help." she said, her voice still brimming with laughter. Okay, she had to calm down.
But the feeling of laughter was pleasant. To her, it was a like a warm, tickling sensation. Laughter had once filled her life, and she missed it. Maybe this guy wasn't so bad... even if he was extremely arrogant.
"Yeah, it doesn't seem like I can ever control my laughter either. Once it comes, it stays and I'm laughing for atleast five minutes,"X slid back into her chair, studying Ryuu with mild interest, "You hiccup when you laugh. It's funny; I do the same when I'm nervous. I wonder why." she mused.

Ryuu gave a grateful nod as the glass of water was placed in front of him. Eagerly, he took a large sip- sighing with pleasure as the cool liquid touched his burnt tongue. "Ah, mhanks," he gargled out, words slurred, his mouth still full of water. He swallowed the water and concentrated on taking smaller sips from now on, so that he didn't run out too fast and could still talk with X. ”Aha, same here!” Ryuu called out. ”My siblings find it hilarious. They make it a game of who can get me to laugh the longest. They spend all day thinking of the funniest jokes or moments, and then all gather around and tell them one after another. It’s the funniest thing,” he said with a chuckle. Children’s senses of humor.. They were a riot! Even though Ryuu despised the work, he adored his family and they loved back just so. However, his parents did wish that he would be more responsible. They wouldn’t be too happy to figure out that while needed at home, he was hanging around at a girl’s house all afternoon. Ah, but who cared about what they though! ”You hiccup when you’re nervous?” he chuckled. ”That sounds even worse than what happens to me!” He pushed back his chair so that it was leaning on two legs. With his hands behind his head and his tongue soothed by the water, he was feeling quite content. This beat cleaning up the house by a ton!

The mention of siblings intrigued X, "You have siblings too?" she queried."Well, they sound like a lot of fun. she grinned, finishing her tea. "How many do you have? I have two, Fel and Daniel. You saw them earlier, right?" her thoughts flickered, once again. Trying not to get distracted from the conversation at hand.
"Yeah, it's the worst, you can't imagine. Especially if you're nervous but trying to be silent. It's like 'Quiet...quiet....HICCUP! It sucks.'" She watched him lean back on his chair, just waiting for the moment when it fell back completely, like that chair always did when she was younger and did that. X remembered when she was seven; she had hit her head and ended up being unconscious for a few hours. It had been horrible back then, but now the memory was almost comical. It was funny how terrifying moments became funny later on.
